On 18 July 2025, the spirit of Mandela Day rallied through the streets of Parkwood as The Message Trust Hub became the heart of a big act of service. In collaboration between the Insurance Institute of the Western Cape (IIWC), Gangstar Café, and The Message Trust, the “Love Parkwood” holiday programme joined hands to show some practical love to the community.

The day began with quiet purpose as around 20 IIWC members gathered at Gangstar Café. With sleeves rolled up they prepared sandwiches. Later, the energy swelled as 25 more IIWC volunteers joined forces with Gangstar Café staff and Parkwood Hub volunteers. Together, they handed out 170 sandwiches, steaming cups of hot chocolate, and a hearty warm meal to children from the programme and the wider community.

Among the memorable moments, one stood out: three little ones, arms linked tightly, made sure none of them missed out on a hot chocolate. Their laughter and smiles lit up the day, a reminder of the joy that comes from looking out for one another. Equally moving was the sight of IIWC volunteers serving side by side with Gangstars—formerly incarcerated individuals now building new lives—united by a shared purpose on Mandela day!

This Mandela Day was more than an event but a story of community and togetherness. And it’s a story you can still be part of. Whether by sponsoring job readiness or barista training for a Gangstar, helping fund the rebranding of Gangstar Café’s events trailer, offering your time and skills, or simply keeping The Message Trust’s work in your thoughts and prayers—every contribution helps write the next chapter.
