Our latest barista course recently came to a close with a beautiful graduation moment — one that reminded us, yet again, why this work matters so deeply.
Five trainees were able to join us in person to celebrate, with a total of eight young people completing the course. Each journey was significant, but one moment in particular stood out. Siya, one of the graduates, bravely shared her story. With honesty and courage, she spoke about the transformation she had experienced, saying, “my life changed the moment I walked through the doors of The Message Trust.”
She shared how the mentorship she received, along with a renewed focus on Jesus, began to shift how she saw herself and her future. Hope — something that can feel distant for so many — became real again. And what made it even more powerful was how her story began to impact those around her, inspiring her fellow trainees to believe that change was possible for them too.
It’s moments like these that ground us. They remind us that beyond the training, beyond the schedules and logistics, real lives are being shaped, restored, and set on new paths.
Since January, Sinawo has led three courses — two barista programmes and one Job Journey (work readiness) course — reaching 15 young people across 23 course participations. Each course has created space not just for skills development, but for growth in confidence, identity, and purpose.
We’ve already begun to see the fruit of this investment. Some of the young people have stepped into new opportunities, with a few gaining casual work experience at Gangstar Café as they take their first steps into the working world. These moments may seem small, but they are significant milestones — markers of progress, resilience, and hope.
Looking ahead, there’s more to come. Sinawo will soon be running another barista course at the Fisantekraal Centre for Development, where 11 more young people will begin their journey. We’re expectant for what God will do in and through this next group.
As we reflect, we’re reminded of a simple but powerful truth: transformation takes courage, and it often takes time. As Siya shared so beautifully, “It took courage and it took time, but we need to hang in there. God is always there. Just show up.”
And so we keep showing up — trusting that in the ordinary faithfulness, God is doing extraordinary things.
Please continue to keep these young people in your prayers as they step into employment and the next season of their lives. There is so much hope here, and we’re grateful to be part of the journey. Pray for Sinawo as she completes her fourth course of the year in partnership with the Fisantekraal Cerntre for Skills Development and prepares for a course at Drakenstein Prison in July.
