More than Coffee: Using Skills Training to Share Hope

Recently, The Message South Africa partnered with the FCD Skills Centre in Durbanville to host a Barista Training Programme designed to equip both youth and adults with practical, employable skills. While participants learned how to prepare quality coffee and develop customer service skills, the training was about far more than coffee itself.

For us, barista training is simply a tool—an opportunity to build relationships, share the Gospel, and help people take meaningful steps towards reintegration into society.

Creating Pathways to Hope

Many of the individuals who attend our programmes face significant barriers to employment and opportunities. Skills training helps bridge that gap by providing practical experience, boosting confidence, and creating pathways towards work, entrepreneurship, and personal growth.

The programme particularly focused on young people, encouraging them to choose positive pathways and envision a brighter future for themselves and their communities. We believe lasting community transformation happens when NGOs, NPOs, faith-based organisations, businesses, and community leaders work together. Through collaboration, we can address some of the root causes of poverty, unemployment, and crime while creating opportunities that restore dignity and hope.

More Than a Barista Trainer

For Sinawo Bingwa, facilitating the programme was a deeply rewarding experience.

“As a Barista Trainer, my role is about much more than teaching people how to make coffee,” she shared. “It’s about building relationships, encouraging people, and helping them realise their value and potential.”

Throughout the training, Sinawo witnessed participants grow in confidence as they developed new skills. More importantly, the programme created opportunities for meaningful conversations and connections that pointed people towards God’s love and purpose for their lives. The training became a practical platform for sharing hope, demonstrating care, and journeying alongside people as they take steps towards restoration and reintegration.

Here I Am, Send Me

During the facilitation of the programme, a particular Scripture remained on Sinawo’s heart:

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!'”
— Isaiah 6:8

For Sinawo, this verse was a reminder that God often uses ordinary opportunities to accomplish extraordinary things. Whether serving a cup of coffee, teaching a practical skill, or having a conversation with someone who needs encouragement, every interaction can become an opportunity to demonstrate the love of Christ.

Stronger Together

Another highlight of the programme was the opportunity to work alongside another organisation with a shared commitment to serving the community.

“It was a great experience facilitating training outside of our organisation and partnering with another NGO,” said Sinawo. “When organisations work together, we strengthen our ability to serve people and create opportunities for those who need them most.”

These partnerships enable us to reach more people, build stronger support networks, and provide holistic opportunities that help individuals move forward with confidence and purpose. We are so greateful for the FCD (Fisantekraal Centre for Skills Development), the opportunity and the incredible work that they do in upskilling unemployed youth. Check out their website here

A Tool for Transformation

At The Message South Africa, we know that lasting change comes through Jesus. Programmes like barista training are valuable because they create spaces where people can encounter hope, build meaningful relationships, and develop skills that support their journey towards a more stable future.

Every lesson taught, every coffee made, and every conversation shared is part of a bigger mission: helping people discover their God-given worth, find community, and experience transformation. Because while we may be teaching coffee skills, our greater purpose is to share the Gospel, empower people for life, and see lives restored from the inside out.
