When you meet Clint today, you see a leader, a disciple-maker, and someone passionately committed to seeing lives transformed through Jesus. But his journey did not begin there. In a recent episode of the Follow Forward Podcast, Clint shared his story of growing up on the Cape Flats amidst trauma, abuse, addiction, and brokenness. Yet what could have defined his future became the very thing God would redeem and use for His purpose.
His story is not simply one of recovery; it is a story of transformation, discipleship, and being empowered for mission.
From Pain to Purpose
Clint’s early years were marked by instability and hardship. The challenges he faced left deep wounds that followed him into adulthood, influencing the choices he made and the direction his life was taking. But even in the darkest moments, God was at work. Looking back, Clint can now see how the Lord was preparing him for a greater purpose. The very communities where he experienced pain would one day become the places where he would share hope. As he reflects on his journey, the truth of Genesis 50:20 resonates deeply:
“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good.”
What others meant for destruction, God would ultimately use for redemption.
Encountering Jesus
For years, Clint searched for freedom in all the wrong places. Like many caught in cycles of addiction and brokenness, he found himself trapped and unable to escape the patterns that were shaping his life. Everything changed when he encountered Jesus.
His relationship with Christ was not just a momentary experience or a decision made in passing. It marked the beginning of an entirely new way of living. As God began healing the wounds of his past, Clint discovered a new identity, a new purpose, and a new future. His story reminds us that nobody is too far gone for God’s grace and that every life can be transformed through the power of Christ.
The Message of Discipleship
A defining part of Clint’s growth was the investment others made in him through intentional discipleship. At The Message, Clint found more than support; he found people who believed in him, walked alongside him, challenged him, and helped him grow in his faith and leadership. Through Empowering for Mission and the culture of discipleship that surrounds The Message family, he learned that God’s plan was not only to heal him but also to equip him to reach others.
Rather than rushing into leadership, Clint embraced the process of being discipled. He allowed God to shape his character, deepen his faith, and teach him what it means to faithfully follow Jesus before leading others. That investment has had a ripple effect far beyond his own life. Today, Clint is discipling others just as he was once discipled, multiplying hope and raising up men and women who are discovering their God-given purpose.
Empowered for Mission
As Clint continued to grow, he sensed God calling him into a new season of ministry. Yet one of the most valuable lessons he carried with him was the importance of honouring the journey and the people who had helped shape him. One statement from the podcast stood out:
“How you end one season is going to determine how you enter your next season.”
Instead of rushing ahead, Clint sought God, listened to wise counsel, and remained committed to finishing well. This posture of humility and obedience positioned him to step confidently into the mission God was preparing for him.
Bringing Beauty from Ashes
Out of that journey emerged Ashes to Beauty, a Christ-centred recovery ministry serving individuals facing addiction, homelessness, and hopelessness. What began with just five residents has grown into a ministry that is seeing lives restored through discipleship, community, and the transforming power of Jesus.
The same grace that changed Clint’s life is now changing the lives of countless others. Every person finding freedom from addiction, every family being restored, and every individual discovering hope is evidence of God’s faithfulness and the power of discipleship in action.
A Legacy of Transformation
Clint’s story is a powerful example of what happens when God meets a willing heart. Through the support of faithful mentors, the discipleship journey at The Message, and a commitment to following Jesus wherever He leads, brokenness has been transformed into mission.
Today, Clint is helping others discover the same hope that transformed his own life. His journey reminds us that God wastes nothing. He can take our deepest wounds, redeem them, and use them to reach others with His love. The story that once seemed marked by pain has become a testimony of purpose, discipleship, and a life empowered for mission.
A Question to Reflect On
Who has invested in your journey and helped shape who you are today? And how might God be calling you to use your own story to bring hope, disciple others, and live on mission?
Because when God redeems a life, He doesn’t just heal the past—He empowers us to become part of His mission for the future.
