Respect Me and confirmation classes!

After some time away from schools and youth spaces over the holidays, it’s been so good for the Respect Me team to be back in the classroom and with young people across Cape Town. We’ve really missed the energy, the questions, the laughter — all of it.

So far this year, we’ve been able to deliver sessions in three different places: a school, a youth group, and now a Confirmation Class at Emmanuel Anglican Church. Each one has been special in its own way, but the confirmation group has really stood out for us.

From the first day, the teens were honest and open about why they were there. One young person said, “All my life I’ve served Jesus for others, but now I want to understand Him for myself.” Another said, “I only came because my friend is doing it — but now I’m actually enjoying learning about Jesus.” Moments like these remind us why we do this work.

We’ve never had an opportunity quite like this confirmation class before, and it truly feels like a privilege to walk alongside these teens in their faith journey.

One of the sessions that touched us the most was the one on Bullying. We spent time talking about the pain we cause others and the pain we carry. Then we gave the group a chance to come before God — to ask forgiveness for anyone they’ve hurt, or to forgive those who have hurt them.

The room went quiet. Some of the teens were crying. Many were really pressing in and asking God for strength. It was a tender moment, and we could feel God moving.

At the end, we encouraged them to choose a friend to pray with and help each other process what they were feeling. Watching them pray together and support one another was beautiful.

It’s only the start of the year, but we’re already so grateful for the doors God is opening. Being back with young people — whether in a school, a youth group, or a confirmation class — reminds us why Respect Me exists. We’re honoured to walk this journey with them.
